Tiger Woods carded a second round 63 to take the lead at the Tour Championship in Atlanta on 13-under at the halfway stage.

He is three shots ahead of Woody Austin, whose second round 65 put him one shot ahead of Mark Calcavecchia, Tim Clark, and defending champion Adam Scott who are on nine-under.

Astonishingly Woods was on seven-under after nine holes of his second round having claimed five consecutive birdies and an eagle.

The world number one holed a 60-foot bunker shot at the fifth to keep his run going and then trumped that with a 70-foot putt at the ninth.

The American finished the back nine in par after picking up two bogeys and two birdies but was still satisfied with his day's work.

He said: "You just play shot for shot. You place the golf ball and you don't worry about anything else."

Woods felt there was an element of luck behind his eagle putt, saying: "If you could have been right behind the golf ball and seen how that ball was bouncing all over the place, it was actually quite funny."

Austin carded his second successive round of five-under to claim second place overnight. He picked up six birdies during his round while a dropped shot at the 14th hole was his first of the tournament.

Open champion Padraig Harrington is tied for eighth place after carding an even-par round to remain on seven-under.

Woods will also seal the FedExCup series with a victory in Atlanta, the 31-year-old currently leads the standings in the playoff series after winning the BMW Championship last week.
