Ricky Barnes had a one shot lead going into final round of the US Open at Bethpage Black.
Barnes carded 70 in his third round to lie on eight under par, and stay ahead of fellow American Lucas Glover.
He is five strokes ahead of England's Ross Fisher and American David Duval as the 60-man field began their final rounds.
Barnes had a six-stroke lead at the turn after an eagle on the fourth hole. But he bogeyed the seventh, tenth, and 12th holes which allowed Glover, who birdied the tenth and 11th, to reduce his deficit.
Englishman Fisher (69) sunk a ten-foot birdie putt at the 18th, while Duval (70) also birdied the final hole.
Canada's Mike Weir (74) fell back to two under along with world number two Phil Mickelson (69).
Two-time US Open winner Retief Goosen shot a second 68 in a row to lie a stroke further back, while Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell (69) is on level par.
Defending champion Tiger Woods is 14 shots off the pace despite birdies at the 12th and 13th.
Oliver Wilson shot a 71 to end the third round at one over, while Lee Westwood (74) is a further shot adrift.
Rory McIlroy, tipped as a potential winner at the start of the tournament, shot a two-over 72 to leave him at four over.
The tournament will finish on Monday, the first time the US Open will go into a fifth day since 1983.
