Schumacher may return on two wheels

Formula One legend Michael Schumacher could make a shock return to motorsport in the World Superbike series.

The 39-year-old, who is a seven-time world champion, retired from F1 in 2006 with Ferrari.

The German has been employed as a consultant to the Italian team for the past two years and has also tried his hand in the German IDM Superbike series.

Speculation that Schumacher would make a return to motorsport has been sparked after he tested for Honda, Yamaha and Ducati.

Honda Racing boss Carlo Fiorani has revealed there could be a place for Schumacher on the World Superbike grid in 2009.

"Michael is convinced that the German championship is right for him at the moment," Fiorani told the La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

"For the moment he has not asked us to race in the 2009 world championship.

"But if he wants to, there is a way for him. All he has to do is ask us."

Schumacher, who won the last of his F1 world titles in 2004, performed well in tests for Ducati in Portugal last week.

The German, who turns 40 in January, has continuingly insisted that riding motorbikes is just a "hobby".

"In the car I had nothing more to learn," he said in an interview earlier this year.

"Here it’s a continual discovery process and that is what appeals to me."
