Silverstone ticket sales hit new heights

Silverstone sees near ten-fold increase in ticket sales for 2009 British grand prix
Silverstone has announced a near ten-fold year-on-year increase in ticket sales for the 2009 British grand prix following Lewis Hamilton's world championship victory.

In the week immediately after the Stevenage-born youngster sealed a dramatic drivers' title at the Brazilian grand prix, organisers of the UK round of the formula one season sold just under 22,000 tickets for the 2009 race.

The Northamptonshire circuit will be hosting the event for the final time over the weekend of June 19th to 21st before Donington Park assumes the rights to the grand prix in 2010.

But it looks set for a record-breaking weekend after seeing ticket sales between November 3rd and 9th go up from around 2,500 in 2007 to this year's best-ever mark.

The managing director of Silverstone, Richard Phillips, commented: "The reaction from fans since Brazil has been incredible.

"We always notice an increase in sales when Lewis wins, or indeed if any of the British drivers do well, but the level of demand for tickets last week exceeded all expectations.

"He is a fantastic ambassador for British motorsport and thoroughly deserved to be crowned world champion.

"We are already looking forward to seeing him here at Silverstone for the British grand prix in June. The atmosphere will be amazing."
