Kimi Raikkonen is pleased to have closed the gap on Lewis Hamilton in the Formula One drivers' world championship after victory in Sepang.

Raikkonen had a much better race than his team-mate Felipe Massa who spun out midway through the race. Massa had started on pole position but Raikkonen had the chance to pass him at the first corner. However, the Finn decided to adopt a cautious approach and it paid dividends.

Raikkonen explained: "We were pretty similar speed-wise, but once he went in my car went better and I was able to go much quicker on my in-lap and pass him.

"After that the car was handling perfectly and I was able to go away."

The defending world champion was pleased to be back in the title race after struggling in Australia last week.

He said: "We had quite a difficult weekend in Australia and we were not 100 per cent sure it was going to be any different here. But everything worked perfectly. This is a good start to the season for us and we're in a pretty good position."

Hamilton, who still leads the standings, said he was happy with how his car had coped with the heat in Sepang and that he had ended the race strongly – pushing Jarno Trulli for fourth place.

"We take away the fact that the car ran very reliably in these extreme conditions, and I was able to push Jarno right until the last second," said Hamilton.End of story
