Fabio Capello said Franco Baldini's reports led him to recall Beckham
England coach Fabio Capello has said part of the reason for recalling David Beckham into the England squad was the positive reports he received of the player's fitness.
Beckham could earn his 100th cap for England after being selected in Capello's provisional squad of 32 players ahead of the match against France next week.
Capello, who omitted the LA Galaxy star from his squad that faced Switzerland last month, said that his assistant Franco Baldini had told him positive things about the midfielder's fitness.
"I always said that when David Beckham was fit he could be in the squad," Capello said.
"I have had good reports on him from Franco Baldini, who watched him on Saturday night, and also from his club.
"I know a lot about David Beckham and what he can offer the team."
Capello also commented on his selection of
Arsenal's Theo Walcott and
Middlesbrough's David Wheater who have been promoted from the Under 21s squad.
"Theo Walcott and David Wheater are two good young players who have done very well for the Under 21s this season and when I have seen them play for their clubs," the England coach said.
"Stuart Pearce has given me excellent recommendations on both players. Next week Stuart has a friendly match, so it is a good opportunity for us to consider some of the younger players for the senior squad."
The Italian also made time to give special praise to the recent form of Michael Owen and Joe Cole.
"I saw Michael Owen play for Newcastle on Monday at Birmingham. I felt he looked sharp, very alive and it was good to see him scoring," Capello said.
"I should also mention Joe Cole who I thought was excellent last night for
Chelsea in a very exciting game. He had a massive impact."
