Ten-man Latics pile on misery for Megson's Bolton
Ten-man Wigan Athletic have piled on the misery for Bolton Wanderers with a 1-0 win at the JJB Stadium.

Despite having Jason Koumas sent off after just five minutes, the home side snatched victory with Emile Heskey's goal on 34 minutes.

The result moves the Latics into joint 12th place while Gary Megson's side remain in the drop zone.

Megson made nine changes with goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi and defender Gary Cahill the only survivors, while Wigan boss Steve Bruce named an unchanged side for the third straight game.

Along with the dreadful playing surface, the home side's afternoon was made tougher when Koumas was harshly sent off by Steve Tanner for a late challenge on Gary Cahill in the fifth minute.

The visitors tried to exploit their man advantage by continually pumping long balls into the box, the best chance falling for El Hadji Diouf who headed wide with the goal at his mercy.

Steve Bruce's side matched their opponents and thought they had taken the lead on 33 minutes when Paul Scharner headed in but the assistant ruled the ball had been cleared before it crossed the line.

A minute later, the Latics were ahead when Heskey brushed off his marker and slammed in a volley from six yards out from Mario Melchiot's throw-in.

On the stroke of half-time, Grzegorz Rasiak's looping header was kept out by Chris Kirkland as the Latics went in at the break ahead.

Bolton continued their onslaught in the second half with a series of flicks leading to Kevin Davies being sent through on goal, but Kirkland spread himself and kept the ball out with his legs.

Nine minutes later, Kirkland raced off his line to punch away a free-kick with Davies clipping the rebound onto the roof of the net.

Bolton were furious on 66 minutes when their penalty appeals were turned down when Michael Brown appeared to use his hand to clear the ball off the line.

In the four minutes of stoppage time, Erik Edman headed Kevin Nolan's header off the line in the dying seconds as Wigan clung on for victory. End of story
