Ramos loses his Midas touch as Spurs crash out on pens

Ramos won't win the Uefa Cup this season
Juande Ramos will not win the Uefa Cup for a third time in a row after seeing Tottenham Hotspur knocked out on penalties by PSV Eindhoven.

Jermaine Jenas could have won the game within the allotted five spot-kicks but his penalty was saved by Gomes, taking the shoot out to sudden death.

Dirk Marcellis scored for PSV before Pascal Chimbonda's effort went wide to end a cagey second leg at the Philips Stadium and Ramos' dream of a third success in a row.

A dull first half saw both sides unwilling to take risks and plenty of fouls ensured the home side protected their advantage at the break.

Dimitar Berbatov saw a long-range effort sail wide while Ledley King's header flew past the wrong side of the post.

But PSV Eindhoven nearly took the lead when Danny Koevermans beat the offside trap and only had to stab the ball past Paul Robinson, but he failed to make proper contact.

A half-time substitution saw the Spurs boss bring Darren Bent off the bench and remove Young-Pyo Lee.

But it was the other full-back, Chimbonda, who created the goal for Spurs when his right-wing cross found the boot of Berbatov - whose sublime volley into the corner from 18 yards forced extra time.

As the tie moved into the extra period both sides erred on the side of caution with Spurs going close through a Bent volley.

Steed Malbranque nearly won it in the dying moments when his volley was clawed out of the top corner by Gomes, taking the game to a shoot out.

And Chimbonda was the villain as his miss sealed the win for PSV to end Tottenham's chances of a second trophy this season.End of story
