Megson urges focus on top flight survival after Euro exit

Gary Megson is now fully focused on the Premier League
Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson has said his team's priority has always been Premier League survival after seeing his side eliminated from the Uefa Cup.

The Trotters lost 1-0 away to Sporting Lisbon last night, after a 1-1 draw at the Reebok Stadium last week, ending their dreams of continental glory at the last-16 stage.

But Megson, who admitted his team are "disappointed" at going out, said he would happily have swapped the early exit for a guarantee of a place in the top flight next season.

"I've said all along our main aim is to retain our place in the Premier League," the manager explained.

"In hindsight I still wouldn't change anything, and there's no sense of relief we are out either.

"We're disappointed. You only have to take a look at the players in the dressing room because we certainly didn't come here to get beat, but our priority has to be the Premier League."

Bolton face a relegation showdown with Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium this weekend, and Megson's team selection for the Lisbon match - leaving a number of key first-teamers at home - seemed to suggest he already had one eye on this match.

And he outlined his demands for the players rested in midweek, adding: "Now I expect all the players left behind to put a shift in at the JJB on Sunday, and hopefully get us a result."End of story
