Erik Edman ruled out for up to six months with knee injury
Wigan Athletic left-back Erik Edman has been ruled out for around six months after suffering a ruptured knee ligament against
Blackburn Rovers.
The Swedish international, who joined the club in January from French side Rennes, will be unavailable until early next season and will return to his native country for the operation he needs.
Edman, a former
Tottenham Hotspur player, will link up with his national side - who take on Brazil at the Emirates Stadium tomorrow night - before flying home to Scandinavia.
A date for his return to Wigan will be confirmed once he is in the early stages of his recovery.
Manager Steve Bruce told the club's official website: "It's a real shame because Eric has looked so natural, and we will certainly miss him.
"He's also a lovely lad and a terrific professional, but he'll get over this and be back for us, I'm sure. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best."
Edman's injury compounds the misery at the club following the 3-1 defeat at Ewood Park - a match Latics number two Erik Black described as "our worst performance" since his arrival at the JJB Stadium to join Bruce late last year.
