Glasgow Rangers' move for defender Shittu collapses

Sunday, 13 Jul 2008 21:00
Walter Smith's side finished second in the SPL last season and finished runners-up in the Uefa Cup.
Danny Shittu's move to Glasgow Rangers has collapsed after failing to agree personal terms.

Watford had accepted a £1.5 million offer from Rangers for the Nigerian international.

Rangers have decided to end their interest in the 27-year-old after contract talks.

Manager Walter Smith said he will look at other options to bolster his defence.

"We have not managed to reach an agreement on that one so it looks as though we are finished there now," Smith told the club's official website.

Rangers' arch rivals Celtic and a host of Premier League clubs have enquired about Shittu.

The centre-back is keen on a move after Watford's failure to reach the Championship playoffs last season.

Shittu joined Watford from Queens Park Rangers in 2006 and has previously had spells with Charlton Athletic and Blackpool.

He was in the Hornets side that was relegated from the Premier League in the 2006/07 season after finishing bottom.

The defender has 12 caps for Nigeria and featured in their run to the quarter-finals in the African Cup of Nations in February.

Earlier this month Rangers extended the contracts of defenders Christian Dailly and David Weir while Andy Webster joined from Wigan Athletic after a loan spell.End of story
