Four-star Magpies pile on misery for hapless Spurs

Sunday, 30 Mar 2008 17:03
Michael Owen scored his 12th goal of the season today
Newcastle United came from behind to thump Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 at White Hart Lane.

The Magpies fell behind to Darren Bent's header, but roared back with goals from Nicky Butt, Geremi, Michael Owen, and Obafemi Martins.

The win for Kevin Keegan's men moves them into 12th spot, while Spurs' Carling Cup hangover continues as they remain in 11th place.

Juande Ramos started with Bent and Jamie O'Hara in place of Aaron Lennon and Pascal Chimbonda, while Newcastle were unchanged from the side that beat Fulham last weekend.

With both side's defensive troubles, the first-half was a predictably open affair.

The Magpies went agonisingly close to taking the lead with full-back Habib Beye thumping a shot against the bar on four minutes, while Joey Barton's drive was palmed away by Paul Robinson minutes later.

Spurs' first chance of the game fell to Jonathan Woodgate, whose bullet header was blocked by Steve Harper on eight minutes.

And it was the home side who broke the deadlock when Steed Malbranque's swerving cross was headed in by Bent, for his eighth goal of the season.

Three minutes later, the north London club were unlucky not to double their lead when Bent went on a mazy run with the ball eventually falling for Dimitar Berbatov who fired the ball over.

The visitors felt they should have had a penalty on the half hour mark when Barton's cross appeared to strike Alan Hutton's arm, but referee Steve Bennett waved away their appeals.

Minutes after Beye had a goal rightly ruled out for offside, the Magpies' dominance was rewarded with the equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

Geremi laid the ball across the edge of the box for Butt whose scuffed shot beat Robinson to make it 1-1.

Keegan's men continued to enjoy the lions share of the possession in the second half, with Barton going close with a half volley from the edge of the box that hit the outside of the post.

And it was no surprise when they took the lead on 52 minutes when Geremi curled a free-kick past a stranded Robinson.

Robinson was then forced to make a fine save to palm away a curling shot from Mark Viduka as the visitors' onslaught continued.

Newcastle sealed the game on 65 minutes when Viduka's dummy allowed Owen to side-foot in Obafemi Martin's cross, for his third goal in three games.

The England striker should have doubled his tally nine minutes later when sent clean through but fired over from ten yards out.

Nigerian striker Martins sealed a memorable afternoon for the visitors seven minutes from time to make it 4-1.

Newcastle took their foot off the gas in the closing minutes to seal their second straight victory which brushes off fears of relegation.End of story
