Drogba: Essien has been star performer

The former Lyon star has been a consistent performer in the Premiership champions' midfield
Goal-machine Didier Drogba believes Michael Essien has been Chelsea's best player this season.

Drogba has been tipped to win the player of the year prize after bagging 17 goals, including a spectacular winning strike against Everton last weekend, already this season.

Essien has also starred for the Blues in midfield including a contender for goal of the season with his equaliser against Arsenal on December 10th.

After a difficult start following his £26 million move from Lyon last season, the Ghana international has formed part of a reliable quartet with Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard, and Claude Makelele.

Drogba believes midfielder Essien has helped the Blues on track to win four trophies this season.

"He has played every minute this season and is one of the best midfielders in the world," Drogba said.

"He is unique. He can play right-back, central midfield and centre-back. Chelsea supporters now know why the club bought him."

Jose Mourinho will again be without skipper John Terry due to a back injury.

Khalid Boulahrouz is expected to replace Terry despite a nervy display against David Moyes' side last Sunday.

Joe Cole is still out while goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini is recovering from a muscle injury.

Wigan will be without dangerman Henri Camara due to a knee injury while striker Lee McCulloch is banned.

Paul Scharner, Ryan Taylor, Antonio Valencia and Steve McMillan are out for Paul Jewell's side.
