Derby relegated after Birmingham clinch Man City victory

Saturday, 29 Mar 2008 18:41
Paul Jewell's Derby side have been relegated in record time
Derby County's relegation back to the Championship was confirmed after their 2-2 draw with Fulham at Pride Park.

A draw was not enough for Derby who become the first team to be relegated in March after Birmingham won 3-1 against Manchester City.

Emmanuel Villa put the Rams in front but they were pegged back by Diomansy Kamara, the Argentinean then scored again in the second half to cancel out Hameur Bouazza's strike.

Birmingham recorded an impressive 3-1 win over City with a double from Mauro Zarate and a penalty by Garry McSheffery doing the damage. Elano scored a penalty for Man City.

A last-minute Andy Reid goal gave Sunderland a crucial home victory over West Ham. Freddie Ljungberg gave the Hammers the lead in the first half and Kenwyne Jones equalised before Reid's late strike.

Two goals from on-form striker Jermain Defoe helped Portsmouth to a 2-0 win over Wigan at Fratton Park. Ryan Taylor also missed a penalty for Wigan while Pompey held just a one goal lead.

Blackburn Rovers and Reading played out a 0-0 draw in the day's only goalless encounter. Marek Matejovsky was sent off in the second half after receiving two yellow cards but neither side could break the deadlock.
