Alex Ferguson has admitted that Manchester United do not have a plan B if the proposed transfer of Carlos Tevez falls through.
The Premiership champions are in danger of seeing legal complications forcing the Argentinean striker's deal to fall outside the August 31st transfer window.
"If it became obvious the situation wasn't going to turn our way we would have to reconsider our plans," United boss Ferguson admitted.
"But I have nothing as a fall-back position at this moment in time."
Tevez aside Man United have been linked with a bid for £10 million-rated Sampdoria hitman Fabio Quagliarella, but have seen another striking transfer target Fernando Torres join rivals Liverpool instead in a big-money deal.
Ferguson insists however he is optimistic the transfer will go ahead after Tevez, 23, passed a medical at Old Trafford last week.
"I am confident Carlos Tevez will sign and I am happy to wait until clearance comes along," he added.
Tevez's registration is held by his current club West Ham, but businessman Kia Joorabchian claims he still holds the economic rights to the former Corinthians forward.
The Premier League has told the Hammers they must receive the bulk of any fee for Tevez, while Football Association representatives are meeting with Fifa on Monday to discuss the affair.
"Fifa and the necessary bodies will try to make sure that the player can play, whether it's for United or West Ham," commented the Red Devils' chief executive David Gill.
"I think they will do everything they can to make sure the decision is made within the appropriate period."
