Chance for Curbs with fortunate opening month

Monday, 16 Jun 2008 11:52
Alan Curbishley might be smiling after a succesful opening month
West Ham United could make an impressive start to the 2008/09 season, with a home clash to Wigan Athletic before travelling to a new-look Manchester City.

The new season's fixture list sees the Hammers with a chance to earn points against Bolton Wanderers and Hull City before Arsenal visit Upton Park, followed by a trip to the champions in Manchester follows.

The end of the year certainly won't be easy for the east London side, with a journey to Anfield followed by clashes with London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, though Alan Curbishley's men would hope to pick up points against Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Stoke City over Christmas.

However, the final month of West Ham's season is difficult to judge, with definite tests against both Merseyside clubs book-ended by a trip to the Potteries to play Stoke City and a final-day home match with Middlesbrough.
