Premiership top two both win

Saturday, 10 Feb 2007 18:53
Ferguson's side show no signs of slipping up
Premiership title contenders Manchester United and Chelsea pulled away at the top as both registered wins on the same day as Liverpool's loss to Newcastle.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side produced a professional performance to keep setting the pace at the top with a 2-0 win over lowly Charlton Athletic.

The Addicks are caught in a tight relegation battle but never looked like salvaging anything to aid their cause as goals from Park Ji-Sung and Darren Fletcher gave the Red Devils all three points.

Chelsea remain six points further back after a comfortable 3-0 win over Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge.

A brace from the league's top scorer Didier Drogba came either side of an own-goal from 'Boro defender Abel Xavier.

Sheffield United bounced back to win 2-1 against Tottenham at Bramall Lane and take themselves a step closer to guaranteeing their survival in the top flight for another season.

Jermaine Jenas put the visitors ahead after just two minutes, but a Rob Hulse header and Phil Jagielka penalty bagged the three points for the Blades.

Another early goal, an Andy Johnson strike after just ten minutes, settled Everton's match against Blackburn at Goodison Park.

The England striker volleyed home a Mikel Arteta header and could have had a couple more in a lively performance.
