Ferguson expects to sign Spurs ace Berbatov

Sir Alex Ferguson believes he will sign Spurs' Dimitar Berbatov
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he has "good expectations" of signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov this summer.

Media sources have suggested for a while that United would pursue the Bulgarian star in a bid to bolster their forward ranks, which looked somewhat thin at times when Louis Saha was out injured.

Berbatov, who joined Spurs for £10.8 million from Bayer Leverkusen two years ago, has impressed in English football since his arrival.

And Ferguson has confirmed that the Premier League champions are hoping to tie up his signature, despite some disagreement between the clubs over a transfer fee.

"We have made Tottenham an offer on Berbatov and we have good expectations that this deal will go through," he told the Sun newspaper.

"Berbatov has been impressive for a long time and would be a great addition to our attack."

However, Ferguson refused to be drawn on whether he is keen to push the move through sooner rather than later in order to have the 27-year-old involved in a full pre-season schedule with the Red Devils.

"I think time will work for us more than against us," he continued.

"We will not stress this situation. We are hoping to have a constructive conversation with Tottenham in the near future."
