Terry header helps Chelsea keep pace with United and Arsenal

Terry's goal was his first in over 18 months
Chelsea closed the gap to league leaders Arsenal following a 1-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light thanks to John Terry's first-half goal.

The visitors took an early lead thanks to their captain who rose above a crowd of players to head home Frank Lampard's corner.

Although the Blues had the best of the first half they had goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini to thank in the second half as Roy Keane's men almost snatched an equaliser.

Chelsea were good value for their lead with Joe Cole mesmerising the Black Cats' defence. Salomon Kalou also looked impressive and almost doubled Chelsea's lead but Phil Bardsley managed to block the Ivorian's goal-bound shot.

The second period was dominated by Sunderland. First Carlos Edwards shot over the bar before midfielder Andy Reid forced Cudicini into a good save from a free-kick.

Lampard tested Craig Gordon from distance but the best chance dell to Kenwyne Jones late on but he could only direct his header straight at Cudicini from six yards out.

Portsmouth were able to climb above Aston Villa in the race for a place in next season's Uefa Cup with a 2-0 win at Fratton Park.

Jermain Defoe was on target for the fifth time in as many matches for his new side. The England striker chipped Scott Carson with sublime skill to make it 1-0 after ten minutes and Nigel Reo-Coker doubled their lead midway through the first half.

With that cushion Harry Redknapp's side cruised through the rest of the game and moved on to 50 points – one ahead of Villa.

Elsewhere, West Ham bounced back from three successive 4-0 defeats with a 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers.

Roque Santa Cruz gave Rovers an early lead but goals by Dean Ashton and a late strike by 18-year-old debutant Freddie Sears gave the Hammers all three points.End of story
