Sunderland virtually safe after win at Fulham

Keane's men almost safe
Sunderland have all-but secured their Premier League survival after grabbing a crucial 3-1 victory away at Fulham.

The result, however, means that Roy Hodgson's side are six points from safety with just five games to go and therefore odds-on to join Derby in the Championship next season.

While Fulham started the game brightly, with Brian McBride wasting a free header and Simon Davies lashing a shot just over the cross bar, it was the visitors who took the lead.

Daryl Murphy managed to find room to whip in a cross, which was headed past keeper Casey Keller by Danny Collins.

Roy Keane's men doubled their lead within a few minutes of the re-start, with half-time substitute Michael Chopra letting a long clearance drop over his head before lobbing over the approaching Keller with his left foot.

This prompted Hodgson to go for all-out attack and substitute David Healey managed to halve his side's deficit by expertly curling in a shot from 20 yards.

However, Sunderland won back their two-goal cushion almost immediately as Kenwyne Jones placed a shot home from 15 yards after some good work from Daryl Murphy.
