Chopra was the super sub for Roy Keane's side
Michael Chopra came off the bench to score an important goal in Sunderland's fight against relegation as they took three points away from Villa Park.

The striker was played through by Kieran Richardson and calmly slotted the ball past the on-rushing Scott Carson to give Roy Keane's men a 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

It was the Black Cats' first away win of the season and helped them move four points away from the drop zone.

Bolton remain in the final relegation spot despite a 0-0 draw against Manchester City at the Reebok Stadium.

The Trotters are now just one point adrift of Birmingham City, who occupy 17th place, after the Blues lost 2-1 away at Reading.

Defender Andre Bikey was the unlikely hero for the Royals. Bikey headed home John Oster's free-kick in the first half to give Steve Coppell's men the lead at the break.

Mauro Zarate equalised for City in the second half but Bikey won the game with ten minutes to go when he converted Nicky Shorey's free-kick.

Derby remain rooted to the foot of the table after a 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough at the Riverside. Turkish striker Sanli Tuncay scored the only goal of the game to help Boro leapfrog Wigan into 12th place.

Wigan dropped that place because they lost 3-1 to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Marlon King had equalised Roque Santa Cruz's early strike in the first half to give the Latics hope

However Jason Roberts claimed a goal for Rovers just before the break and Santa Cruz netted again in the second half as Mark Hughes' side moved ahead of Manchester City into eighth place on goal difference.End of story
