Nash bridges goalkeeper gap after joining Stoke from Latics

Carlo Nash has joined Stoke City on loan until the end of the season
Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Carlo Nash has joined Championship leaders Stoke City on an emergency three-month loan until the end of the season.

Nash, who joined the Latics from Preston North End on a free transfer last summer, has been signed by the Potters after Sunderland recalled on-loan goalkeeper Marton Fulop last week.

That left Stoke manager Tony Pulis with Steve Simonsen as the only senior goalkeeper, before veteran Russell Hoult was recalled from his loan spell at Notts County.

And Nash, 34, who Pulis describes as "a very, very good goalkeeper", will see significant first-team action in the Championship until the end of the campaign.

"Nashy is a good goalkeeper and a terrific professional," said Wigan manager Steve Bruce, who is able to call on the services of first-choice stopper Chris Kirkland and veteran back-up Mike Pollitt.

"We are in a very fortunate position to have three Premiership-standard goalkeepers at the club.

"At the moment, Carlo is the one who has been missing out and when Stoke enquired for him, I felt it was in Carlo's best interests to get some much needed action.

"I can't speak highly enough of him as a professional and he goes with our blessings, knowing that he could return if anything happens to Kirky or Polly."

Stoke City become Nash's ninth senior club in a career spanning 14 years.

Among his other professional employers are current Premier League sides Manchester City and Middlesbrough, and Crystal Palace, Stockport County and Wolves.
