Roy Keane blasted his Sunderland side after their 2-0 loss to Newcastle United in the north east derby.

Two first-half goals from Michael Owen continued the Magpies' resurgence at St James' Park.

The Black Cats' best chance fell to Kenwyne Jones, whose bullet header was tipped over the bar by Steve Harper in the second half.

Keane, who side remain in joint 15th place, admitted his side were below-par.

"We were okay but we know okay is not good enough," Keane said.

"We gave two bad goals away. We got better in the second half but the game was probably over at half-time.

"We lost three players this week but you can't make excuses like that.

"I thought we were strong enough to get a result but we gave them a helping hand in terms of goals we gave away."

Newcastle are now unbeaten in their last six games and are in joint 11th place with Tottenham.

Magpies boss Kevin Keegan admitted it was not a classic derby game.

"We never really got going as a team but the fact we won it tells you we have players like Michael Owen who can get us something," Keegan said.

"The scoreline of 2-0 was maybe about right but Sunderland fans might say it slightly flattered us.

"It was a hard game and we were never on easy street despite the early goal and one just before half-time." End of story
