Everton were unlucky not to progress, claims manager David Moyes
David Moyes believes Everton should have won their Uefa Cup tie against Fiorentina in normal time before losing out on penalties.

The Serie A side progressed after winning the shootout 4-2 at Goodison Park, despite holding a significant 2-0 lead from the first leg in Italy.

Goals from Andrew Johnson and Mikel Arteta levelled the score at 2-2 on aggregate and the Toffees had chances to win the tie outright inside 90 minutes.

But a series of squandered opportunities sent the match to penalties, resulting in heartache for the full house on Merseyside.

"We had enough chances to win the tie and we probably should have done," Moyes told the Everton website after the match.

"We played some good stuff, they are a good side. We didn't play well over there, but we made up for it tonight."

The final nail in the coffin for Everton's European hopes was a superb performance from Fiorentina's French goalkeeper Sebastien Frey, who made numerous saves during the match and stopped Phil Jagielka's spot-kick in the shootout.

"He saved them and his saves were the difference," Moyes added.
