Mourinho: We're in a great position

Tuesday, 26 Dec 2006 09:57
Mourinho is targeting a successful second half of the season
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that his side are in a great position going into the second half of the season and feels they will improve during the title run-in.

The Blues take on Reading in the Premiership today in the first of two home fixtures over the festive period and could go top of the table for a short while with a win in the lunchtime game.

Mourinho said that he is pleased with the team's points haul as they battle to overcome long-term injuries and suspensions and is looking forward to being back at full strength.

He said: "We're in a great position. At this moment the gap is two points. So for the second part of the season, I feel we can be much stronger."

The Blues boss does not envisage any major transfer activity at Stamford Bridge during the January window as he feels his current group of players is good enough to bring success to the club.

"When John Terry, Joe Cole and Petr Cech are back in the team, this is more important than spending money on new players," he added.

In the reverse fixture earlier this year both Cech and fellow goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini were injured, leaving the Chelsea staff fuming, but Reading boss Steve Coppell says there are no lingering issues from that game.

Both sides look set to name unchanged sides for their Boxing Day clash. John Terry remains sidelined for the champions while Reading's Ibrahima Sonko and Stephen Hunt have recovered from knocks and should play.End of story
