Winterburn joins Blackburn as defensive coach

Nigel Winterburn becomes defensive coach at Blackburn Rovers
Former Arsenal player Nigel Winterburn has joined the backroom staff of Blackburn Rovers as the club's new defensive coach.

Winterburn, 44, will work alongside new first-team manager Paul Ince at Ewood Park as the former MK Dons boss continues to put together his coaching staff.

Ince was appointed as the successor to Mark Hughes towards the end of last month following his former Manchester United team-mate's decision to take over the top job at Manchester City.

And club chairman John Williams believes Ince is already ticking all the right boxes in constructing his coaching team.

"Pulling together a new backroom team with the right balance of skills, experience and ideas across sports science, recruitment and coaching is clearly important and we are nearly there now," Williams said.

Winterburn's appointment comes just two days before the Blackburn squad fly out to Germany on Wednesday for the club's pre-season tour.

And the former Gunners defender will travel with the squad to begin his new job, having relinquished the majority of his existing media commitments.End of story
