Sir Alex Ferguson brought a strong Manchester United side to Aberdeen to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his former club's greatest triumph, the victory over Real Madrid in the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup final in Gothenburg.

A United side which featured Wes Brown, Michael Carrick, Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs won 2-0 on a day of celebration at Pittodrie.

Goals in each half from a Michael Carrick penalty and Wayne Rooney were the difference as the European champions got their pre-season campaign underway with a comfortable victory.

Carrick gave them the lead in the first-half, after Rooney had been brought down in the box.

Neville, making his first start since March, also went close with a long-range effort, while the home side had a goal disallowed for being offside.

Rooney doubled the visitors' lead in the second-half with a pinpoint header to make it a good day at the office for United.

Ferguson was given a standing ovation by the home fans as he emerged from the dressing rooms at the start of the second-half in recognition of his achievement as Aberdeen boss in Gothenburg 25 years ago.
