Paul Scholes will receive a one-match ban after receiving his marching orders in Manchester United's stormy Champions League tie with Roma last night, Uefa has clarified.
The United midfielder was automatically ruled out of the Old Trafford quarter-final return leg next week when German official Herbert Fandel brandished a yellow card for a foul on Christian Wilhelmsson in the first half.
With 33 minutes gone in the Stadio Olimpico, Scholes then received a second yellow, and consequently a red, for clattering into Roma's Francesco Totti, raising questions as to whether he would receive a two-match suspension overall.
But European football's governing body confirmed today that the 32-year-old will be eligible for the first leg of the Champions League semi-final should United rectify the 2-1 deficit.
Scholes famously missed United's Champions League triumph in 1999 after receiving a second booking at the semi-final stage.
United or Roma will line up against the winner of Bayern Munich against AC Milan in the semi-finals, with that tie delicately poised after Tuesday's 2-2 draw in the San Siro.
