Defender Pique set to quit Old Trafford for Barcelona

Sir Alex Ferguson signed Gerard Pique as a 17-year-old in 2004
Manchester United are set to sell defender Gerard Pique back to Barcelona, according to the Spanish giants.

Pique joined United in 2004 as a teenager but has failed to be given a run in the first-team.

The 21-year-old has made just 14 appearances this season, mostly as a substitute.

Txiki Bergiristain, Barcelona's sporting director, said they are close to sealing a deal for the centre back to return to the Nou Camp.

"Things are at an advanced stage," Bergiristain said.

"I can't deny that he is one of the players we're interested in, but he is involved in the Champions League final so things are on hold."

Pique impressed during a year-long loan spell at Real Zaragoza in 2006. The Spaniard made just six league starts in four years at Old Trafford.

The centre back has failed to get a look in due to the form of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Mikael Silvestre was preferred to Pique when Vidic was sidelined through injury last month in United's march towards the Premier League title.

Barcelona, who will be managed by ex-captain Josep Guardiola next season, are set for an overhaul this summer after finishing trophyless for the second straight season. End of story
