Eriksson says fans' support may not save his job

Sven-Goran Eriksson has thanked the travelling Manchester City fans for their support during the side's 1-0 defeat to Liverpool yesterday.

The City fans repeatedly sang Eriksson's name during the game in an effort to persuade owner Thaksin Shinawatra to retain the Swede as manager next season.

Rumours have been circulating for weeks that Shinawatra has become displeased with City's recent form and that he has chosen to replace Eriksson at the end of the season.

City's form has been patchy towards the end of the season and they have taken just ten points from a possible 30 over their last ten games.

Speaking after the defeat against Liverpool, Eriksson said: "The support for me was fantastic, of course it is. It makes me stand up from the bench a lot but I can do that, no problem.

"It was fantastic, of course I am thankful. They have been fantastic all season, incredible."

Eriksson says he does not want to discuss his future at the club until the season finishes next week, after which he plans to have candid talks with Shinawatra.

He said: "Maybe it will not affect things, I don't know. But we have one week to go until the season is finished. But I would appreciate it if people would accept that we will start talking after that."

Eriksson said he knew it would take a while to turn City into a top six side but claimed he thought it was possible to achieve at some point.

The Swede believes the team's strong start to the season could have got hopes too high and created ambitions they were not yet ready to fulfil.

However, the former England boss insists progress has been made since he took charge.

"It is good. It would have been better to qualify for Europe, I agree, but next season that could happen," he concluded.End of story
