Lee is set to rejoin Liverpool following three years at Bolton
Former Bolton Wanderers manager Sammy Lee is set to rejoin Liverpool as Rafael Benitez's assistant next season.

Lee enjoyed an illustrious career with the Reds before becoming a coach there in 1993. He eventually became Gerard Houllier's assistant but left at the same time as the Frenchman.

Lee is a vastly experienced coach and was part of the England coaching staff under Sven-Goran Eriksson before joining Bolton in 2005.

When Sam Allardyce left the Trotters at the end of last season Lee was given the opportunity to become head coach. However, Bolton's poor form at the start of their campaign meant Lee only last 14 games in the job.

Benitez has been looking to appoint an assistant since last summer when former number two Pako Ayesteran left the Anfield club.

First team coach Alex Miller has also recently left to manage Japanese club JEF United Chiba, prompting chief executive Rick Parry to approach Lee about a return to the club.

American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are reported to have approved the move, paving the way for Lee to return to the club he represented over 200 times as a player and coached for a further 11 years.

The appointment is likely to please the Reds' fans, some of whom have vocalised their disillusionment with the club's board in recent months.End of story
