Wayne Rooney broke the deadlock at the Madejski
Manchester United maintained their place at the Premier League summit after a late Wayne Rooney strike put them on their way to a 2-0 win away to Reading.

The Royals had frustrated the visitors until the England striker combined with Carlos Tevez on 75 minutes to put them on route for three points.

Cristiano Ronaldo maintained his superb scoring return and sealed the win with a goal in the last minute of normal time.

Chelsea also left it late in their 1-0 win away to Birmingham as Claudio Pizarro dived bravely into the penalty-box fray to head home with 12 minutes left at St Andrews.

Middlesbrough were forced to settle for just a point from their visit to Ewood Park after Matt Derbyshire scored a second-half equaliser to make it 1-1.

Gareth Southgate's side had taken the lead after 15 minutes as David Wheater powered home a header from an excellent set-piece from Stewart Downing.

Tottenham got off to a flying start in their 2-0 win over Sunderland with Aaron Lennon stealing in at the far post after just three minutes to put Spurs ahead.

Robbie Keane notched the 100th goal of his Tottenham career with a shot that sneaked under Craig Gordon late on.

Portsmouth recovered from an early goal to comfortably beat Derby 3-1 at Fratton Park.

Lewin Nyatanga had given the Rams a surprise lead but a hat-trick from Benjani Mwaruwari ended the Pompey faithful's long wait for a home goal and secured victory.End of story
