Paul Jewell not confident Derby can beat lowest-ever Premier League points total
Paul Jewell says he is almost resigned to the fact that Derby County are set to break the record for the lowest-ever Premier League points total.

The former Wigan Athletic boss, who was joined by long-time assistant Chris Hutchings at Pride Park last week, took over from Billy Davies as manager earlier this season.

Since Jewell's arrival in November, the Rams have accrued just five points - giving them a meagre total of 11 throughout their 36 games so far this season.

With only two games left - against Blackburn Rovers and Reading - Derby must win both in order to surpass the current lowest total of 15 achieved by Sunderland in 2005/06.

But Jewell admits this is a tall order for a team that has won just once throughout the campaign.

"It would be nice [to get two wins] but you wouldn't hold out too much hope, would you?" Jewell told Setanta Sports.

"The most important game for me now is the first game of next season.

"We would love to get past 15 points but that isn't going to give us anything but a little bit of credibility."

Jewell has repeatedly decried the last five months with Derby as the most difficult period of his career.

And he admitted after last night's 6-2 home defeat by Arsenal that his side "are clearly not good enough for this level".End of story
