Bolton move out of relegation zone with Boro win

Saturday, 19 Apr 2008 17:17
Megson's side are moving in the right direction
Bolton have boosted their hopes of surviving the drop from the Premier League following a vital 1-0 win away at Middlesbrough.

Gavin McCann scored the only goal of the game just before the hour-mark to help the Trotters move ahead of Birmingham City who face local rivals Aston Villa tomorrow.

Gary Megson's side are one point ahead of the Blues on 32 while Reading's defeat at Arsenal earlier in the day means the Trotters move ahead of them on goal difference.

McCann scored following a Matthew Taylor corner which Gary Cahill met with a good header. Boro goalkeeper Ross Turnball saved well but McCann poked the rebound home from close-range.

Bolton have now won their last two games and will hope to keep that run going in their final three fixtures against Tottenham, Sunderland and Chelsea.

Fulham's hopes of avoiding relegation took a hit after a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Craven Cottage – they are now five points from safety.

The Reds rested some of their key players with Tuesday's Champions League tie with Chelsea in mind, but they were still too strong for the Cottagers.

Jermaine Pennant put Rafael Benitez's men in front midway through the first half. The winger latched on to Lucas' through-ball and hammered it past Kasey Keller into the top corner.

Pennant was enjoying running at the Fulham defence, which continued to back off him, and in the second half he created the Reds' second goal for Peter Crouch.

Tottenham's poor finish to the season continued with a 1-1 draw against Wigan which further helps the Latics' survival chances following their 1-1 draw with Chelsea earlier in the week.

Dimitar Berbatov put Spurs ahead after six minutes but they could not hold on the lead for long and some slack defending let in Emile Heskey who earned Wigan a point when he fired past Radek Cerny from close range.

In the day's other game West Ham beat Derby County 2-1. Bobby Zamora gave the Hammers the lead midway through the first half. Tyrone Mears equalised for the visitors in the second half but Carlton Cole snatched the winner ten minutes later.End of story
