Paul Jewell has beaten off the interest of Spanish side Espanyol to add the Dutch international midfielder Denny Landzaat to his Wigan Athletic squad for an undisclosed fee.

The 30-year-old playmaker completed a move from Dutch side AK Alkmar, which is believed to have cost the Latics somewhere in the region of £2.5 million.

Jewell is confident that he has signed a player who will take to the Premiership immediately.

"He is a midfielder with an eye for goal and is my type of player. He has pace, hunger and vision and plenty of international experience," the manager said.

Landzatt's compatriot and new club captain Arjan de Zeeuw added his praise.

"We need a player who can come forward from midfield, he has good speed, plenty of energy, and I think it's a great signing," he said.

Landzatt was part of Marco van Basten's World Cup squad, but appeared only briefly as a second-half substitute in the final group game against Argentina.

He has 21 caps for his national side and led the unfashionable Alkmar to runners-up spot in the league last season.

There will be a host of new faces at the JJB Stadium this season with chairman Dave Whelan already signing large cheques to bring striker Emile Heskey and defender Fitz Hall to the club.
