ECB confirms Ashes tour dates

Monday, 05 May 2008 11:45
England will hope to repeat the success of 2005
The England and Wales cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed the itinerary for the 2009 Ashes series against Australia.

The tour will be preceded by the World Twenty20 tournament in June before the Test series begins in July. The tour finishes with a seven-match one-day international series in September.

Current county champions Sussex host the Australians in their first warm-up match and the tourists will then face England Lions at Worcester before the first Test in Cardiff on July 8th.

Lord's hosts the second Test before a brief break in the action when Australia play a three-day game against Northamptonshire.

In between the fourth and fifth Tests, at Headingley and the Oval respectively, Australia are due to play a short two-day game against Kent at Canterbury.

A historic one-day international between Scotland and the Aussies in Edinburgh precedes two Twenty20 internationals between England and Australia at Old Trafford.

Other Test match grounds, including Durham's Riverside, Nottingham's Trent Bridge and Hampshire's Rose Bowl, will play host to some of the one-day internationals in September.

David Collier, the ECB chief executive, said: "The summer of 2009 promises to be one of the most exciting in the history of cricket in England and Wales.

"The npower Ashes series and the NatWest Series, along with the NatWest International Twenty20 matches, have the potential for providing the sort of wonderful cricket which can fire the nation's imagination."

England will hope to repeat their success of the 2005 Ashes series which saw them win the coveted urn.
