Payne keen to become England regular

Tim Payne insists he can stake his claim as an England regular in tomorrow's clash with world champions South Africa at Twickenham.

The Wasps prop was brought in yesterday to replace loosehead Andrew Sheridan, who is still suffering with a neck injury.

Payne will be winning his ninth cap but it will be only the second time that he represents his country on home turf.

The 29-year-old earned rave reviews for his performances in England's summer tour to New Zealand.

And Payne admits he is excited about showing his credentials to new coach Martin Johnson.

"It's not the first time I've been in this position and you've just got to keep your head down and get on with it," Payne said.

"When something like this happens and someone gets injured you feel sorry for them but you've got to take your chance.

"I had a good time on the summer England tour. I know things didn't go all that well overall but I felt I did well on the pitch and I enjoyed it.

"I've been around this squad for a while, know the set-up and I'm familiar with what we're trying to do, so I'm looking forward to the challenge."

England will be looking for a change in fortunes after last Saturday's 28-14 loss to Australia.
