Chelsea have signed Daniel Sturridge on a four-year deal after his contract expired at Manchester City.
The two clubs could not agree a fee for the striker. Because Sturridge is under the age of 24, it means City are entitled to some compensation which will be settled by a tribunal.
Reports claim Chelsea could end up paying £5 million for the 19-year-old.
City were thought to be seeking a development fee of £10 million while the Blues are understood to have offered £3 million.
Sturridge stunned City by demanding £55,000 a week to sign a new contract at Eastlands, according to reports.
He had also been linked with Aston Villa and West Ham United, but will add to the attacking options at Carlo Ancelotti's disposal this season.
Sturridge, nephew of former Derby forward Dean, made 26 appearance for City last season, scoring four times. But his first-team chances look limited with City signing Roque Santa Cruz and being linked with Carlos Tevez and Samuel Eto'o.
Former Middlesbrough goalkeeper Ross Turnbull became Ancelotti's first signing on Thursday.
