Michael Owen says he hopes his transfer to Manchester United can help re-ignite his career after what he described as a "poor spell" at Newcastle United.
Owen admitted he had been surprised by United's approach for him but said he did not hesitate when offered the chance to join the Premier League champions.
He told MUTV: "I agreed without a moment's thought. This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I intend to seize it with both hands.
"I've had a poor spell up at Newcastle but prior to that my career was very good, and I'm sure a top club like this can re-ignite my career."
Owen's time at St James' Park was blighted by injury and he scored just 26 league goals in four seasons with the club.
That form has caused him to fall out of the England squad and he has yet to be picked since Fabio Capello took charge despite being third on the all-time scorers list for England.
The 29-year-old hopes his move to Old Trafford can help him rediscover his scoring touch and drive the team, and himself, to more silverware.
"Hopefully I can score a few goals and help the team to more success," added Owen.
"It's early days but when you think about United, you automatically think about winning trophies, the stadium, the massive fanbase."
