Triple Olympic gold medalist Chris Hoy has been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year at the Echo Centre in Liverpool.
The 32-year-old cyclist was recognized for his performances in Beijing where he triumphed in the team sprint, keirin and solo sprint.
Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton finished in second place, while swimmer Rebecca Adlington took third.
Hoy said: "I really wasn't expecting this, it is such a shock. After the year the team has had, to win the big one is incredible.
"I have had a fantastic team behind me, the support for the team has been incredible. It has been a fantastic year for cycling."
David Brailsford was named Coach of the Year for masterminding Britain's cycling success in the Beijing Olympics, while the cyclists won the Team of the Year prize.
Meanwhile, England and Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. The 71-year-old was presented the award by his brother Jack.
Swimmer Eleanor Simmonds was named Young Personality of the Year after her gold medal in the Paralympics in Beijing.
Recently-retired rugby commentator Alastair Hignell was given the Helen Rollason Award for his battle with multiple sclerosis, while amateur boxing coach Ben Geyser was presented the Unsung Hero Award.
