Midfielder Michael Essien signs new five-year Chelsea contract
Chelsea have announced that midfielder Michael Essien has signed a new long-term contract with the club until 2013.
The Ghanaian international put pen to paper yesterday following the team's arrival in China as part of their pre-season tour of Asia.
And his signature is part of new boss Luiz Felipe Scolari's plan to agree long-term contracts with all of the club's top-rated stars.
"I am really pleased to have extended my contract with Chelsea," Essien told the club's official website.
"I am very happy here; we have a great team and fantastic fans who have always made me welcome.
"With the addition of the new manager, I am feeling very positive about the season ahead."
Essien is one of the star-studded Blues' key players, winning the fans' player of the season award in 2006/07.
And his versatility has proven essential throughout his three years at Stamford Bridge, as he has filled in across the back four as well as in midfield in his 143 appearances for the club.
Luiz Felipe Scolari said: "I have not been here long but it is clear to me that Michael Essien is one of the best midfield players in the world.
"I have always admired him and it is good news for me and for Chelsea that he signs for so long."
And chief executive Peter Kenyon added: "Since we signed Michael in 2005 he has been a fantastic player for Chelsea.
"I think everyone has been impressed by his power and skill.
"He is a player who would improve any team in Europe so we are very happy he has committed his future to Chelsea."
Essien is the third first-team player to commit his long-term future to the club, following similar deals with left-back Wayne Bridge and goalkeeper Petr Cech.
