Championship side Queens Park Rangers have sacked their manager Iain Dowie after only 12 games of the league season, with the team sitting in ninth place.

The 43-year-old finds himself without a job despite a decent start to the campaign, which leaves the R's just one point outside the playoff places.

Player/coach Gareth Ainsworth has been named as caretaker boss at Loftus Road until a new manager is found.

In a brief statement, the club announced: "The board of Queens Park Rangers Football Club has terminated the contract of manager Iain Dowie with immediate effect.

"Dowie, who took over the reins at Loftus Road in the summer, oversaw 15 matches in charge in all competitions and leaves the R's in ninth place in the Championship."

In May, Dowie replaced former head coach Luigi de Canio, who left by mutual consent following discussions with Hoops chairman Flavio Briatore.

The QPR job was Dowie's third since his acrimonious departure from south London club Crystal Palace in May 2006.

Following his stint at Selhurst Park he was appointed by Premier League side Charlton Athletic, although a poor start to the 2006/07 season led to him being sacked after less than six months.

His next job, at Coventry City, was also a short-lived affair - he lasted less than 12 months after being appointed in February 2007, citing a "significant difference of opinion" with the Sky Blues board.
