Joe Cole scored on his comeback from injury as Chelsea beat Blackburn 2-0 in the League Cup.
It was a keenly contested affair, which was perhaps to be expected in the all-Premiership tie and Cole broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute.
He knocked the ball home from the edge of the six yard box from Salomon Kalou's cross. Kalou then doubled their advantage 25 minutes later after Brad Friedel had parried Shaun Wright-Phillips shot.
Elasewhere Tottenham routed Mk Dons 5-0 as Jermain Defoe put the weekend's biting controversy behind him to score twice.
Mido also grabbed a pair either side of Defoe's efforts and substitute Robbie Keane scored the fifth late on.
Newcastle eased past Portsmouth 3-0 after on-loan striker Giuseppe Rossi scored and Nolberto Solano got two more.
Rossi's goal came from a badly cleared free kick as he scored from the left hand side of the area. Five minutes later Solano made it two from Damien Duff's run and cross, before then making it three in the final minute of the game.
Bottom of the table Charlton eased the pressure on Ian Dowie with a 1-0 win over Bolton at the Valley.
Marcus Bent scored the wining goal early in the first half from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's measured cross on the right.
Bolton had the best of the play in the second half but failed to breach the Charlton goal. Tal Ben Haim had the best chance, nodding wide from close range.
