Defending champions Zenit St Petersburg will take a narrow lead into the second leg of their Uefa Cup clash with Stuttgart following a 2-1 win at home.

Szabolcs Huszti gave the Russians the lead after just two minutes but German international Mario Gomez snatched an equaliser after 15 minutes.

Just before half time Anatoliy Tymoshchuk managed to restore Zenit's lead giving them a crucial advantage heading into the second leg in Germany.

Elsewhere, Valencia and Dinamo Kiev shared a 1-1 in the Ukraine.

Spain's David Silva gave Valencia the lead after just eight minutes but struggled to breakdown a stoic Kiev defence.

The Ukrainians were fortunate to get back into the match just after the hour-mark when Raul Albiol scored an own goal.

Kiev had Artem Milevsky sent off with 18 minutes remaining but were able to hold on for a draw.

There was less good news for Spanish supporters after Deportivo la Coruna were beaten 3-0 away to Aalborg.

The Danish side who had dropped down from the Champions League dominated proceedings.

Winger Anders Due was the star performer for Aalborg, scoring twice in the second half. Michael Jakobsen then gave them a big lead to take into the second leg when he added the third from the penalty spot in the 90th minute.

AC Milan earned a 1-1 draw to take back to the San Siro against Werder Bremen. Filippo Inzaghi scored in the first half from the Italian side before the home side equalised through Diego late on.

A late brace from Guillaume Hoarau helped Paris St Germain beat Wolfsburg 2-0 while fellow French side Bordeaux were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Galatasaray.
