Formula one team Spkyer have announced that Japanese driver Sakon Yamamoto will be replacing Christijan Albers for the remainder of the season.

Yamamoto, 25, who made his F1 debut in 2005 and subsequently raced several times for the Super Aguri team last season, will be taking a place alongside Adrian Sutil in the team.

The new driver joins Spkyer after the team decided to release 28-year-old Albers earlier this month over an issue relating to sponsorship.

Commenting upon his appointment, Yamamoto said he was "very pleased" to get an opportunity to race in F1 again.

"I know all the circuits very well, having raced at them with Aguri last year," he said.

"I want to do the best I can and help the team achieve their objective of moving up the field. I'm looking forward to working with them."

Spyker team principal and managing director Colin Kolles described Yamamoto as "one of the most promising young Japanese drivers, who showed potential in the races he contested in 2006".

The team also announced that it expected the signing to safeguard its financial footing in 2007 as Yamamoto brings his own personal sponsorship deals to the table.

With seven races in the current championship remaining, Spyker are one of only two teams that have failed to garner a single point, alongside Toro Rosso.
