X Factor winner Joe McElderry has earned himself some solace after missing out on the 2009 Christmas number one by topping the charts going into the new year.
The diminutive Geordie was pipped to last week's top spot by Rage Against The Machine's Killing in the Name following an internet campaign to keep the reality show winner from achieving the accolade.
But after selling almost 200,000 more copies of his debut single The Climb in the past seven days, McElderry has overtaken the American rockers and could yet finish the year in the top five biggest-selling singles.
For much of the year, the field has been led by Lady Gaga's Poker Face, which has sold around 870,000 copies.
The number five position for the year to date is held by In For
The Kill by La Roux, with around 660,000 sales - 10,000 ahead of McElderry.
This week's top five also features X Factor judge Cheryl Cole with her single 3 Words at number four. Lady Gaga's Bad Romance is at number three with Starstrukk by 30H3 featuring Katy Perry at number five.
