Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton breezed to victory in West Virginia last night, taking two-thirds of the vote against rival Barack Obama.

The pair have been battling for their party's nomination in primaries throughout the United States since January but neither has managed to muster enough delegates to take victory.

Mr Obama is now widely perceived as being the frontrunner over Ms Clinton. According to CNN he holds 1,881 delegates and 282 superdelegates, compared to 1,713 delegates for Ms Clinton and 273 superdelegates.

Last night's win for Ms Clinton in West Virginia saw her take 67 per cent of the vote, to 26 per cent for Mr Obama.

She used her victory speech to express gratitude for "this overwhelming vote of confidence" and pledged to continue the race until the end.

"I am more determined than ever to carry on this campaign until everyone has had a chance to make their voices heard," Ms Clinton said.

But her speech also contained pledges of unity with Mr Obama, saying the pair had always "stood together on what is most important".

There are just four states left to hold primaries, with Kentucky and Oregon up next on May 20th.
