Former US vice president Dick Cheney has been taken to hospital in Washington suffering from chest pains, officials have confirmed.
The 69-year-old's office said doctors were continuing to evaluate his condition and he was "resting comfortably".
Mr Cheney has suffered four heart attacks in the past and has had an implanted defibrillator since 2001.
Reports in the US state doctors have conducted a series of tests on the former vice president and he may receive additional treatment later today.
Mr Cheney has maintained a high profile since leaving office in January 2009, continually attacking Barack Obama and his administration over issues such as the president's plans to close Guantanamo Bay.
It is believed Mr Cheney had been due to met Mr Obama's predecessor George Bush and other former colleagues on Friday.
