Over 80 Taliban fighters have been killed in clashes with coalition forces in Afghanistan, according to the US military.
The clashes occurred in the southern province of Helmand after a coalition convoy came under fire in the Taliban-controlled town of Musa Qala.
A spokesperson for the US army in Afghanistan said air strikes had been requested after the patrol was attacked with rockets and machine guns.
"The combined patrol immediately returned fire, maneouvered, and employed close air support, resulting in almost seven dozen Taliban fighters killed during a six-hour engagement," a coalition statement said.
There has been no independent confirmation of the casualties suffered in the attack.
The US military has recently reported gains against the Afghan resistance movement that has been fighting against it since the NATO invasion of the country in 2001.
American military officials also claim to have arrested three militants in the Wardak province and also reported making territorial gains in the eastern province of Konar.
