The United States has confirmed a child in Texas has died of swine flu.
The death is the first outside of Mexico, where almost 160 people are thought to have died.
The Reuters news agency quotes authorities in Washington as confirming the death of the 23-month-old Mexican child.
There have so far been more than 60 confirmed cases of swine flu across six states in the US and president Barack Obama has called for extra funds to help fight the virus.
The state of California had already declared a state of emergency over the outbreak, with governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announcing there had been 11 confirmed cases
"We are taking strong and swift action to limit the spread of the virus and limit its effects," he told a news conference on Tuesday.
